« If I were rich, I ___ travel. »

would · will · did · can

✔ Réponse : would

Hypothèse irréelle : if + prétérit, would + verbe.

« I wish I ___ taller. »

were · am · will be · be

✔ Réponse : were

I wish + prétérit modal : I wish I were = j'aimerais être.

« If I had known, I ___ come. »

would have · would · will have · had

✔ Réponse : would have

Irréel du passé : if + past perfect, would have + participe passé.

« If I ___ a car, I would drive to school. »

would have · had · has · have

✔ Réponse : had

Hypothèse irréelle : après if, on met le prétérit (had). Would ne va jamais dans la partie en if.

« If she studied more, she ___ better marks. »

got · would get · gets · will get

✔ Réponse : would get

If + prétérit (studied) est suivi de would + verbe : she would get, elle aurait de meilleures notes.

« If we ___ in London, we would visit you. »

would live · live · lived · will live

✔ Réponse : lived

Le would de la deuxième partie montre que l’hypothèse est imaginaire : après if, il faut le prétérit lived.

« What would you do if you ___ a million pounds? »

won · will win · win · would win

« If I had time, I ___ you. » (je t’aiderais)

would help · help · helped · will help

✔ Réponse : would help

Le conditionnel français (aiderais) se traduit par would + base verbale : I would help you.

La forme contractée de « I would » est…

I’m · I’ve · I’d · I’ll

✔ Réponse : I’d

I’d = I would (ici). I’ll = I will, I’m = I am, I’ve = I have.

La structure est If + prétérit, would + verbe.

« If I were you, I ___ that. » (je ne ferais pas ça)

didn’t do · wouldn’t do · don’t do · won’t do

✔ Réponse : wouldn’t do

If I were you (à ta place) est suivi de would ; à la forme négative : wouldn’t + base verbale.

« If I knew, I would tell you » signifie…
